My temperature gauge goes past half, I can only be driving for 20 mins in traffic and it will fluctuate...I have a 99 grand am and have had it for almost a year. Also it smells as if its burning or just too hot. Also. I drove for over an hour with the a/c on and when I finally parked the car it began leaking coolnat..this happend once btw, I just never drove that far w/the a/c on again. Thanks! Your thermostat could be sticking shut, the cooling fan went out, or your water pump went out. Start with the thermostat. Replace it. If that does not solve the problem, then do the water pump. could have a sticking thermostat or the cooling fan isnt working. if the fan is working then you need to flush the cooling system and change the thermostat. Clutch was going out so over the weekend i dropped the tranny and put a new clutch in it. No big deal. Finish it all up last night and went to start it and.... nothing. Only 2 wires going to the starter so i didnt screw those up. Now, push in the clutch and nothing happens when you turn it to start except the cooling fan starts. Beat on it with a hammer... nothing. Try to jump start it with a screwdriver and nothing. I plug in the battary charger and run one side to the hot side (the nut under the little black boot) and the other to the small single wire term on the starter and you can hear the bendix pop out but it wont engage the motor. You hit it with power and it sounds like the bendix pops and hits the flywheel. Worked fine when i took it apart. ha ha. car insurance. Auto parts : Brake Pad Set Jaguar 1997. Scion . How to Reset a 1993 Mercedes RadioMany Mercedes-Benz vehicles produced for the 1993 model year were equipped with theft-deterrent systems built in to the radio. The system locks the radio if it is removed from the vehicle or if the connection from the radio to the battery is interrupted. The radio must be unlocked by entering a unique code to reset it. The code that unlocks the radio was provided with the Mercedes-Benz when it was first purchased. If you do not have the code, you can obtain it from a Mercedes-Benz dealer. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Step by Step : 1 Turn the ignition switch on. Do not start the engine. 2 Turn the radio on. The display will indicate that it is locked. 3 Press the radio station preset buttons to enter the code. The code may be between 4 and 6 digits. The radio is unlocked and reset when the final digit is entered.
Scion . How Much Does It Cost to Replace an Engine?Getting 150,000 or 200,000 miles out of a modern vehicle is increasingly common. When an engine starts to clunk out, motorists can be stumped by a decision to replace it or buy a new car. Costs Cost of replacement depends on the make and model of the car. Some high-performance engines can cost beyond $9,000, as of 2010. For many jobs, $1,000 to $2,000 is a decent benchmark expectation for a motorist to have before a mechanic gives the formal price quote. Considerations If an engine is worn out, more than likely the steering column and other structural elements are not far behind. Consumers should always factor in potential costs of everything before deciding to preserve the car's life with an engine replacement. Engine Life Most manufacturers have 100,000-mile warranties on new vehicles because modern engines are lasting longer with proper maintenance. Many replacement engines are guaranteed for between six and 12 months of use. Examples New York-based Action Auto Wreckers advertises a number of replacement engines. Many BMW engines are in the $3,000-range. Some mid-1990s Honda engines can be replaced for several hundred dollars. A 1990s-model Dodge pickup engine is listed for $1,200. All figures are as of 2010. *belt after running the engine for 15 minutes and again at 100 miles. Keep old belts or spare belts in the trunk of your car for emergencies. If replacing one yourself doesn't seem worth the effort, many service stations can adjust or replace belts, but they may not have the specific belt you need. Replacing \lour Thermostat If your vehicle has been overheating or doesn't warm up properly, and none of the things in the preceding section is the problem, you may need to replace your thermostat. This little gizmo simply stays closed and keeps the liquid in the engine block until the engine heats up. Although a simple device, it can malfunction. If the thermostat sticks in the open position, it doesn't keep the liquid in the engine long enough, and you have trouble getting your car warmed up. If the 725

Because replacing the thermostat is quite simple and thermostats are quite inexpensive, you may want to try this task before you take more drastic measures: 1. Locate your thermostat, if you haven't already done so. Most thermostats are located where the top radiator hose joins the engine, so these steps deal with this type. If your thermostat is in the bottom radiator hose, the principle is the same. 2. Get a new one. Supply the usual information (vehicle make, model, year, and so on) to the auto supply store. If you've done other work on your vehicle, you should be an old hand by now. 3. Unscrew the clamp that holds the end of the radiator hose where your thermostat is located. !? Or you can consider this a golden opportunity to flush your cooling system and change the coolant by following the instructions earlier in this chapter. 5. Remove the bolts that hold the thermostat housing in place, and lift out the old thermostat. There's a gasket around it — get that off, too. Scrape off any pieces of gasket that may be stuck, but be sure not to let these pieces fall into the hole. 6. Lay the new gasket in place. If the new gasket doesn't match the old one, you probably have the wrong thermostat. 7. Drop in the new thermostat, making sure to place the spring side down (see Figure 14-17); then replace the bolts. Figure 14-17: Thermostats are replaced spring side down. Scion . Replace whatever liquid ran out of the hose by pouring it out of the container and into the radiator fill hole. . Chapter 14: Keeping Your Car from Getting Heartburn Servicing. Air Conditioners Most people tend to run the air conditioner in their vehicles until it breaks. However, air conditioners should be serviced professionally each year for some good reasons. Because air conditioners contain refrigerant under pressure, which can injure or blind you if it escapes, do not attempt to work on the air conditioner or its hoses yourself. If your vehicle was built prior to 1992, the air conditioner contains a refrigerant called Freon (CFC-12). Because Freon contributes to the breakdown of the ozone layer, manufacturers ceased production in 1995. Newer vehicles use an environmentally acceptable refrigerant called R-134a. If you have a pre-1992 vehicle and your air conditioner breaks down, you may find that Freon is hard to obtain. Your options are to either run without air conditioning or have the air conditioner converted so that it can use R-134a. To find out the cost to convert a vehicle's air conditioner from Freon to R-134a, consult the auto manufacturer or an authorized dealership or service facility, or call the EPA Stratospheric Ozone Information Hotline at 800-296-1996 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. EST. You can also find information about ozone on the Web at www. epa. gov/docs/ozone/i ndex. html. Scion . What is a truck sling?
